the fish are dying
boiled in their mother’s cradle
they stare glassy-eyed
at the dim light cresting the churn
yearning for nothing
but to be bereft of bellies
distended from refuse
effusive in their communes
and soon to spawn anew
yet that ship has left port
and now they sparkle
like an undulating geode
their antipodes laid bare
soon radiation-baked
and caked with opportunists
while the early-bird tourists
scuttle amidst the morning air
but do they stop and wonder
what gift has been rescinded?
for what limbered liquidity
so many families dismembered?
not ever,
for the weather is pleasant today
and the waves calm for swimming
and as the birds begin skimming
the newfound feast floating in the drink
why pause to think back
to when those same lustrous lakes
were bathed in life?
overhead the dawn breaks
and still more quakes are coming
are you prepared?

the hour is early, even for her. simple garments flutter in the saline breeze as she trudges to the shore, the waning light of the moon guiding her shuffling footsteps. soon, she comes to rest, and as the first wave of the morning thunders across the otherwise barren sand, the ocean begins to blaze.
[...]
the morning grows late. the ocean’s undulating blue-green surface soon shirks the sun’s hold, and she focuses on the waves rolling in from the distance. they’re the color of the eyes set like gemstones in her memory. they’re gone, of course, subsumed into time’s boundless depths. but for a moment, she imagines them gazing into hers once again, and she smiles.
